The master closet in our bedroom was dark and dingy and I always felt like it was just nasty. I cleaned it the best I could when we were in a hurry to move in, but it still left me feeling icky. Yet, there were so many other projects that needed to be done first. Finally, it was time for our master closet renovation!
The walls were covered in some kind of cheap OSB board and the shelf built in there was covered in some old, nasty, sticky (on top) contact paper. The only things I put on the shelf were some plastic bins and cardboard boxes, and that was out of necessity.
All of my shoes were dumped in that blue box down on the floor. Having to do that ruined several pairs of my sandals! Granted a few of them needed to be replaced anyway, but it still made me so mad. Which just added to my disgust of this closet.
We knew dry wall was out of our comfort zone on expertise, so we decided to go with bead board. Just getting the first sheets of bead board up, made an amazing difference! It was already so much brighter and fresher.
As with other projects in this house, we ran across some weird things to deal with, like random pieces of dry wall and wires coming out of the ceiling to disappear into the wall. We have just learned to not even try to figure it out.
We (aka my husband) worked evenings after work cutting trim in our sunroom to finish off with corner pieces, baseboards, and crown molding.
After caulking along the trim work, we had to decide if we were going to paint or just leave it as is. It would be so much easier to paint before putting in the closet system, but with our schedule it was going to add another week to the project. Since I didn’t know (and still don’t) what color scheme I wanted to use in the bedroom, we decided to leave it.
It took us a few tries, but we finally decided on the layout that would work best for our needs.
This master closet renovation project was really an easy way to bring such a major uplift to our master closet.
It not only looked an hundred times better, it held so much more than we had in there before. My husband did need to do Marie Kondo to his clothes, but that had to happen even before the renovation. When you downsize from 4000 sq ft to less than 1400, lots of things just have to go!
We have been able to maintain the organization without any effort for the first time ever in a closet.
I really do just love it!
Eventually, we do plan to change out the old slated bi-fold doors for flat faced ones; however, we won’t be doing that until we are ready to paint and replace the trim in the whole bedroom.
Hopefully, this inspires you to make a simple change that brings some added beauty and practicality into your own life.
In His Grace,
Misty
