I decided that one of the changes I would make for myself and for my daughter was to switch to a natural deodorant. I’ll be perfectly honest, I did not find this an easy or comfortable switch. I sweat, I stink.
So, let’s talk deodorant, specifically anti-perspirants, for just a moment.
Anti-perspirants contain known toxins at levels that are considered “safe”. Testing over the years have given conflicting reports on whether or not the body absorbs and is affected by these ingredients.
Rumors have also been going around for several years that anti-perspirants cause cancer; however, there have not been any definitive test results to support those rumors. Regardless, testing on cancerous breast tissue was shown to contain some of the ingredients active in anti-perspirants.
Given all the unknowns about KNOWN toxins, I wonder if it is not in my best interest to just avoid them when I can.
I wanted to share this with you now because winter time really is the best time, in my opinion, to make the switch. There is a period of “detoxing” that your body goes through when you make the switch and this period typically lasts about 2 weeks. Unless, you live in the deep south, you just don’t sweat as much in winter. That helps to make the “detoxing” period feel a little more manageable.
So, what are your options in natural deodorant?
There are several out there, so II will tell you what I tried in order to help you get started making the switch yourself.
I first tried Young Living’s deodorant. I love Young Living Essential Oils and many of their personal care products. However, I tried both scents and, honestly, neither one worked for me. I felt like I needed to put it on several times a day and was always stinky. However, I have friends that use this and love it.
I also have friends that use Young Living toothpaste. Yes, that is correct, toothpaste. They say it works amazingly! I, however, found I just couldn’t bring myself to put toothpaste under my arms. If you can, go for it!
So, I did a google search for the top natural deodorants. There were several that came up, but I decided to try Native. I had heard someone on YouTube mention how much they liked it, so it was familiar. One source I found online ranked it #1; although, that was not the case on other sites. (I also found an online coupon code which was a bonus!)
I have tried two different Native scents now. The first was a Lavender scent and it worked ok, but I wasn’t 100% satisfied. However, I wasn’t ready to give up. I then tried their Cucumber Mint and, I have to say, it does seem to be working well.
I read online somewhere that Manuka Essential Oil is a natural deodorant, so I have recently also started adding a drop to the top of my deodorant before applying and I think that has taken it to the next level.
There are definitely other natural deodorant companies out there and I encourage you to just start trying them out and see what formula works best for you. Everyone’s body chemistry is different, so what works for one may not work for someone else.
While testing has not proven that the toxins included in anti-perspirants are causing you harm in those amounts; they have also not dis-proven it either.
I believe that anytime we can have control over what goes into and onto our bodies, we should exercise that control.
