Waiting for God to act implies we wait and He acts. Often we are so focused on waiting patiently, we forget the part about him do the acting.
In a previous post I talked about the secret of waiting well and about our journey in selling our current home. During this process, God placed a scripture verse on my heart.
Be still in the presence of the Lord,
Psalm 37:7 (NLT)
and wait patiently for him to act.
The part that continued to stand out was “wait patiently for him TO ACT.” I needed to wait and watch for Him to do what He planned in His perfect timing.
It wasn’t about me, it was about Him and what He would do.
As I delved more into this scripture verse and the surrounding verses, I felt the Lord was trying to tell me even more. I felt like God had brought this Psalm to me for a reason, so I wanted to figure out why.
I first noticed verse 4:
Take delight in the Lord,
Psalm 37:4 (NLT)
and he will give you your heart’s desires.
God knows the desires of my heart, and He knows what I long for without my speaking them aloud. However, it wasn’t just about God knowing my desires, it was how much I want my desires to line up with His desires for me. My desires are no good if they are outside of His plans for me; therefore,
I began to pray that God would fill my heart with His desires.
I then started looking at more of the verses in David’s Psalm. While David was writing about the wicked verses the righteous, God was showing me lessons He wanted me to see concerning our own period of waiting.
God was calling me to take actions while I was waiting for Him to act.
Verse 1 – Do not fret (NIV) / Don’t worry (NLT)
Verse 3 – Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell (NIV)
Verse 4 – Delight in the Lord
Verse 5 – Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him
Verse 7 – Be still
Verse 8 – Stop being angry!
Verse 27 – Turn from evil
Verse 34 – Wait for the Lord (NIV) / Put your hope in the Lord (NLT)
The more I read and meditated on this Psalm, the more I realized that it was not a checklist of what to do so that God would act.
It is more of instructions while I wait for Him to act.
These instructions will not give me all that I might want, but they will help me to experience a deep and abiding relationship with my heavenly Father. Which is, ultimately, the desire of my heart.
We are still waiting for God to act in our house situation; however, no matter the outcome, this journey has taught me how my relationship with Him can be stronger in the waiting.
